Grant Assistance for Failing Septic Systems

The Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund is money set aside by the state of Maryland to assist in the replacement of failing septic systems throughout the state. Chavis Septic Services would like to alert you that, if you have a failing septic system, you may be eligible for grant assistance to help pay for the cost of upgrading your system.

Call Chavis Septic Services at (410) 838-1200 for more details on grant funding, and if you may be eligible.

Upgrades Are Prioritized to Biggest Threats

According to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), there are approximately 420,000 septic systems in Maryland. Of these, 52,000 systems are located within the “Critical Area,” which is land within 1,000 feet of tidal waters. The average septic system does not remove nitrogen; instead it delivers about 24.32 pounds of nitrogen per year to the groundwater.

An upgraded, nitrogen-removing septic system cuts a system’s nitrogen load in half. The Maryland Department of the Environment has upgraded more than 5,000 septic systems to nitrogen-removing Best Available Technology (BAT) through the Bay Restoration Fund (BRF) Onsite Sewer Disposal System (OSDS) grant program.

Due to extremely high demand, the Maryland Department of the Environment now prioritizes funding for septic system upgrades toward those systems that pose the greatest threat to clean waterways and drinking water. In accordance with state law, the Bay Restoration Fund prioritizes upgrades as follows:
  • Failing OSDS or holding tanks in the critical areas
  • Failing OSDS or holding tanks not in the critical areas
  • Non-failing OSDS in the critical areas including new BAT installation
  • Non-failing OSDS outside the critical areas
